AlaskaLawHelp.org Shares 11th Annual Webby Award for Best Law Website
The winner of the 2007 Webby Award for Best Law Website is LawHelp.org ? a national network of state portals, including AlaskaLawHelp.org ? providing low and moderate income individuals with access to legal information. AlaskaLawHelp, Alaska?s online guide to free legal self-help and referral information, is maintained by Alaska Legal Services Corporation in conjunction with Pro Bono Net, the national nonprofit leader in technology solutions to expand access to justice for those in need.  Launched in July 2002, AlaskaLawHelp now serves more than 130,000 visitors a year. AlaskaLawHelp offers court forms, self-paced instructional slide shows, links to organization and agency web sites, answers to frequently-asked legal questions, information on community resources and supportive services, and a referral locator.  Project partners include the Alaska Court System, Alaska Bar Association, Disability Law Center of Alaska, Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Alaska Immigration Justice Project, Alaska Native Justice Center, and the Alaska State Court Law Library.    ?Frankly, when I first heard about it, I thought it was yet another promotion for Spiderman III,? said Andy Harrington, Executive Director of ALSC.  ?But after a more web-savvy friend explained it to me, I was pleased that the Webby Awards were recognizing the innovative work of LawHelp.org.  Our own local version, AlaskaLawHelp.org, plays a crucial role here in making information about legal rights accessible to the public and improving outcomes for those who cannot afford to hire an attorney.? Hailed as the "Oscars of the Internet" by the New York Times, The Webby Awards are the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. The awards are presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a body of media luminaries that includes Harvey Weinstein, Arianna Huffington, Matt Groening, Internet inventor Vinton Cerf, and RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser. "The Webby Awards honors the outstanding work that is setting the standards for the Internet," said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. "LawHelp?s selection is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators." The 11th Annual Webby Awards received a record 8,000 entries from over 60 countries and all 50 states. About Alaska Legal Services Corporation Alaska Legal Services Corporation is a private, non-profit corporation providing free civil legal assistance to low-income Alaskans.  Founded in 1966, the law firm?s mission is to provide meaningful access to justice in resolving civil legal problems for low-income clients, thus promoting family stability and reducing the legal consequences of poverty.  Major funding for AlaskaLawHelp was provided by the Legal Services Corporation?s Technology Initiative Grant program, which promotes full access and high-quality legal representation through the use of technology.

Protecting Yourself Against the Unauthorized Practice of Law
It takes a lot to become a lawyer.  In almost all cases, you have to have a high school diploma, a college degree, and a law school degree.  That?s 19 years of education. In Alaska, you have to pass a written bar examination.  This is a two and a half day test that tests a person?s knowledge of the law, the ability to spot legal problems in a set of facts, and to write in a persuasive and understandable way.  It is one of the hardest tests in the United States. You also have to have character and fitness to practice law.  You must be an honest, fair, and reliable person.  You must provide character references, list the places you have lived in the past, the employers you have worked for, other licenses you have held, and submit your fingerprints so that the Bar Association may learn whether you have any criminal history.  The Bar Association does not want lawyers who will lie, cheat or steal.  After that, you have to continue to study the law to keep current on changes because there will always be changes.  Lawyers do this by reading the latest cases from the courts, law review articles or
