Chronic and Acute Medical Assistance (CAMA)
by: Alaska Legal Services Corporation   LSC LOGO
Q.What is CAMA?
A.

Chronic and Acute Medical Assistance (CAMA) replaced the General Relief Medical program, which was not funded by the Alaska Legislature. As the name implies, it is only for chronic and acute medical problems; it is only to be used as a last resort; and it is only month-to-month.

Q.

Does that mean I have to reapply every month?

A.

Yes, in most cases. Persons who are expected to need medical assistance for more than one month, for example nursing home residents, can be approved for more than one month, but caseworkers are cautioned against it.

Q.

What does CAMA cover?

A.

CAMA is not a comprehensive medical coverage program. It only covers:

  • Major medical inpatient hospital care
  • Nursing home care and related services
  • Limited physician visits
  • Drugs and prescribed medical supplies for persons with terminal illnesses, undergoing chemotherapy, or who have certain chronic illnesses
  • Necessary medical transportation
Q.

What do you mean by "last resort?"

A.

You must have exhausted all other means:

  • You are not eligible for any other medical assistance program, and
  • You have very limited income and resources.

Lawyer Advertising. In some jurisdictions this web site may be considered lawyer advertising. The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Any listing of an attorney does not constitute a recommendation of the attorney. Before hiring any attorney, you should investigate the attorney's reputation and qualifications.

Unless you are already a client of the attorney, your e-mail may not be protected by the attorney-client privilege. Moreover, unless it is encrypted, e-mail can be intercepted by persons other than the recipient. Deadlines are extremely important in most legal matters. You may lose important legal rights if you do not hire an attorney immediately to advise you. Many people do not check their e-mail daily, and some attorneys do not respond to unsolicited e-mail from non-clients.
