Q.

My driver's license is canceled, suspended, and/or revoked.  How can I get my license reinstated?

A.

To get your license back following the loss of your driving priviliges, you need to apply for a new license at a Division of Motor Vehicles office and meet the following requirements:

1.  Pass the written and vision tests.  You may need a road test as well.  A road test is required when a license has been revoked a year or more.

2.  Pay the reinstatement and license fees.

3.  Present proof of birth and identity.

4.  Present a notarized Parent Consent form if you are under 18.  (Required when your parent or guardian will not be accompanying you to the DMV)

5.  Sometimes, you may need to take care of other problems before you are able to get your license back.  A DMV employee can tell you what you need to do to get your license back.

Q.How do I replace a lost driver's license?
A.

If you have lost your Alaska driver license, you will need to obtain a duplicate license to replace it.  To obtain a duplicate Alaska driver license, you must apply in person at a DMV office and:

-provide two pieces of identification
-pass a vision test
-have a new picture taken
-pay a duplicate license fee

The expiration date on your duplicate license remains the same as your lost license.

Q.

Can I have the vision restriction removed from my license since I've had eye surgery and can now meet the vision requirements without corrective lenses?

A.To have the restriction removed, you must obtain a new license.
Q.How do I obtain an Alaska driver license?
A.An applicant must be at least 16 years old and have held a valid driving permit for at least 6 months.  If you are under 18 years old, you must have a parent consent to first obtain a Provisional drivers license.
Q.

What is a provisional driver license?

A.Provisional licensing applies only to individuals under 18 years old.  If you are under 18, you must have held a valid instruction permit for at least 6 months before you may obtain a provisional license.  Once you have your provisional license, you must wait for at least six months before graduating to a regular driver license.
Q.Are there restrictions on provisional licenses?
A.

Yes.  With a provisional license,

-you may NOT carry passengers under the age of 21 with the exception of siblings

-you may NOT operate a motor vehicle between the hours of 1:00 am and 5:00 am.

Q.Are there exceptions to these restrictions?
A.

There are two exceptions to the restrictions on provisional licenses.  The restrictions apply unless:

1) the provisional license holder is accompanied by a person who is at least 21 years of age who is licensed to drive the type of vehicle being driven

2) the provisional license holder is driving to or from your place of employment or within the scope of your employment.  All driving must be along the most direct route.
